Grateful Alive

Posted by: Sally Ann Lake

“Look out any window, any morning, any evening, any day…
Maybe the sun is shining, birds are winging, no rain is falling from a heavy sky…”
– Grateful Dead

Northwell Health Wants You Well – being grateful can get you there.

“Gratitude, particularly if practiced regularly, can help you be healthier and happier,” says blogger and Wellness Learning and Communications Specialist, Dina Morgan.

Northwell Health’s Employee Wellness team wants to focus on your gratitude technique during the fifth week of its Stress Less Challenge. Dina shares five ways to practice gratitude, which will positively impact your sleep, exercise habits, outlook and happiness:

1. Wake up with gratitude: Make gratitude your first thought in the morning. It sets a positive tone for your entire day.
2. A Gratitude Journal: Each day this week, write down three things you are grateful for. Appreciate positive aspects of your situation and jot them down. Re-read your entry from each day prior, to affirm your gratitude.
3. The Virtuous Cycle: Since our brain can’t easily process both positive and negative input together, when we redirect our minds to start seeing things we’re grateful for, our brain looks for more things to be grateful for. It’s called a virtuous cycle.
4. Carry a Gratitude Stone: Ever pick up a smooth stone at the beach or on a hike that you just couldn’t put down? Make it your gratitude stone and keep it in your pocket or on your desk. In the moments when you hold it, give thanks more deliberately.
5. Express Your Gratitude: Share what you’re grateful for with people around you. Positivity can be contagious, and saying it aloud is an affirmation for you.

Note to self: Make a note about how you were feeling, in general, at the start of the week. At the end of your gratitude week, revisit how you were feeling to see if you notice a difference.

I said Amen!!! to all the things I just read. Its sooo refreshing to be grateful and how fortune we are to have a job, food, shelter and health. We need to learn to appreciate the people around us, even if we don’t get along, let keep positive.
